National schools equestrian association was formed in 1991 to co-ordinate inter-school competitions and also to promote riding in state and independent schools.

Since then, there has been a huge surge in popularity.

An increasing number of pupils are now riding in curricular time.

Riding has been included as a games option in many schools. GCSE and A level PE have riding options.
It is also possible to ride on the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Many schools also offer BHS / Pony Club Exams, in conjunction with their local governing body.

Schools have also recognized that riding can play an important role in the physical & emotional development of pupils of all ages, and are beginning to realize the time & commitment that it takes.

AIMS of the NSEA

- to improve pupils knowledge of the principles of riding & welfare of the horse.

- to promote excellence in riding, with competitions geared towards the correct training of both horse & rider. ( see NSEA qualifiers)

- to provide a number of competitions in a variety of disciplines from grass roots level up to a good national standard (Pony Club Area, BE JRN level )

- improve access to horses through ABRS/BHS approved riding schools in all areas for pupils who would otherwise be unable to ride.
