Education through Equestrianism Nationwide

The NSEA was formed in 1991 in order to co-ordinate inter-school equestrian competitions and promote riding at all levels, in State and Independent schools.

The NSEA are working in partnership with the BHS.

Since then, there has been a huge surge in popularity. An increasing number of pupils are riding in curricular time.

Riding has been included as a games option in many schools. GCSE and ‘A’ level P.E now have riding options. It is also possible to ride on the ‘Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme’. Many schools offer BHS/ Pony Club exams, in conjunction with their governing bodies.

Schools are realising that riding can play an important role in the physical and emotional development of pupils of all ages, and they are beginning to recognise the time and commitment that is needed in order to succeed.

The NSEA hopes to:

a) Promote excellence in riding, with competitions geared towards the correct training of both horse & rider.
b) Improve pupils knowledge of the principles of riding and horse welfare.
c) Promote a number of competitions in a variety of disciplines from grass roots level up to a good national standard, all over the country.
d) Improve access to horses through BHS approved riding centres in all areas for pupils who would otherwise be unable to ride. (The NSEA supports the Emile Faurie Foundation – see links)
e) Encourage sportsmanship and a sense of fairplay at all times.
f) Promote riding as a sport for life, to be continued after a pupils time at school.
g) Encourage disabled riders to take part in equestrian competitions.
